FRANCESCA BRUNNER - STATEMENT"Painting, to me, is an expression and study of life, where various elements come together in logical and illogical patterns, and rhythms, to create a whole that strives for equilibrium. The activity of painting itself inspires a desire to make sense of my world, where each piece takes me on many journeys and tangents to work itself out as a cohesive piece." 9.06 BIOGRAPHY (born 1963, London, England) Francesca studied art and design in London, before training to be an architect in 1988 at Pratt Institute, New York. After practicing as an architect for many years in New York, she moved to San Diego in 1999, and, while raising her two children, started redeveloping her artistic skills. She studied painting with San Diego artists Reed Cardwell and Pia Stern, and has found the medium to be an exciting source of discovery and inspiration. Francesca grew up in a household of music and art. Creative expression across a variety of media was a fundamental part of the family dialogue. She also spent a lot of her childhood traveling between Europe and the US. The richness of her cross-cultural background and the continuing sense of a personal journey are given form in her work. Influences include music, organic structures, and the urban environment as well as numerous artists, including Agnes Martin, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Hans Hoffman. Her work is abstract, geometrical, and explores space, structure and composition. It incorporates regular and irregular grids, and often resembles mazes, or cities. |
